As a business owner or leader, you likely come across multitudes of resources, advice for leadership, and methods of productivity every day. And sometimes, a new resource or method leads to significant improvement for you, and you know it will make a difference for your team’s performance. 

Implementing change within your organization can be tricky. Have you ever tried to rollout a new tool or training for your team only to have them immediately forget it? You thought you had done enough to get everyone started, but your team members go back to managing their work instead of spending the time on something new. There are three elements to a successful rollout of a new system or training for your team. As an example, we’ll use a rollout of a new personality assessment that helps people understand how they solve problems at work. 

 

Start with Mindset 

Just because you’re sold on this new assessment doesn’t mean your team will automatically be all in. You need to give them some context. Understanding why this assessment and system is important to them personally and to the business’s vision will help them get in a mindset ready for change. 

The personality assessment and relevant training are tools that will help your team members understand how each of them works, which will lead to better collaboration and ideas. It will allow your team members to focus on their strengths and identify what problem-solving methods they do best. Getting buy-in at the beginning is crucial to having a successful rollout. 

 

Get an Expert 

Along with most change, your team members will have a lot of questions. As much as you’ve researched and practiced this new tool and method, your team members will think of different questions than you. They each come with a unique perspective.  

You likely won’t have all the answers they need. And you don’t want to half explain a new tool or method because then your team will begin to have doubts about its effectiveness. We recommend you bring in an expert to train your team. When you bring in someone with authority on the topic, your team members will get all their doubts and questions answered, which creates momentum. 

 

Have a Plan 

Work with the expert to define the next best steps for implementation. For the personality assessment, you might want to give everyone time to complete it in the training. Or you might want to set a deadline for when your team members need to submit it. And you could schedule a few follow-up trainings or Q&As with your expert.  

Get specific about how you can use this tool to improve how your team works together. Having a diverse group of personalities can give your organization an edge by having more viewpoints and ideas. Knowing where each person is coming from based on the assessment will limit misunderstandings and clarify your team members’ strengths and motivations. 

Share your action plan before you end your initial training. When your team knows what to expect, they will be better mentally prepared for change.
